If you are like me and looking for ways to eat healthier and save at the same time, then you’ll love this copycat “Bisquick” mix!
It takes just minutes to make, is cheaper than buying the Bisquick brand and it doesn’t have any ingredients that you don’t recognize or can’t pronounce.
On top of all that, we actually like the things I make with this homemade mix better than when I made them with the Bisquick brand! Definitely a win all around!
Here are a few of my favorite recipes that use this Bisquick substitute:
- Easy John Wayne Casserole
- Bisquick Chicken Alfredo Casserole
- Easy Bisquick Chicken Pot Pie

Bisquick also contains buttermilk which adds a slight tang to the flavor. You can buy powdered buttermilk in a can.

When I look at the Bisquick ingredient list online, I’m not seeing buttermilk. But maybe I’m simply missing something?

I’m excited to try this. Some things I would have like would be temp for butter and metric measurements to make halving easier. Most people who bake regularly use scales for precision.
Listed in the ingredients on the package: Ingredients.
Enriched Flour Bleached (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), Corn Starch, Leavening (baking soda, monocalcium phosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate), Dextrose, Vegetable Oil (palm, sunflower, canola, and/or high oleic soybean oil), Sugar, Salt, Monoglycerides.
Going to make a batch for biscuits tonight and apple crumble tmrw to compare. Most recipes leave out sugar and cornstarch. Excited to try the results!

I hope you loved this Bisquick substitute, Sam! The butter should be cold for this recipe and you can easily Google the metric equivalent for the US measurements. I have thought of adding metric measurements but the recipe card program that I use doesn’t always convert things perfectly so I’ve been a bit nervous to do it.

Can this be made with wheat flour?
Lydia Beiler
I’ve never made it using all whole wheat flour. The most I’ve done is 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 all purpose. You can use all whole wheat flour, but anything you make with the mix may end up being a bit drier and possibly more crumbly. If you try it, I’d love to know what you think!
DenisekCarr
I’m guessing all purpose flour
Sorry if I missed that information
Thanks,
Denise Carr
Lydia Beiler
Yes, that is correct. And I should update the recipe to make that fully clear.

Can this be made using almond flour?
Lydia Beiler
I’m sorry but I don’t have any experience with almond flour so I’m not really sure. If you often use almond flour in place of all-purpose flour in baking recipes, then I’m guessing it might work. But I really don’t know.

What does Bisquick use instead of butter to be able to store on shelf.
Lydia Beiler
The box says that it uses vegetable oil however, Bisquick is quite powdery, so I’m not sure how that works. If you want it to be shelf stable, you can always use a shelf stable shortening like Crisco.
Judy Chandler
Can you use powdered butter in mix? Such as Augson farms, Judees etc.
Lydia Beiler
I don’t have any experience using powdered butter, Judy, so I’m not sure if it would work or not.
ginamarie quinn
How long can it be stored using shortening?
Lydia Beiler
It can be stored as long as the shortest expiration date of the ingredients. So if your baking powder has the soonest expiration date, that is the one that you would use.
Sandy
When you say mix cup for cup as you would for biscuits, what do you mix the flour mixture with?? Water or milk or what? We don’t have this in New Zealand
Lydia Beiler
Good question, Sandy! So Bisquick is a mix that you add other ingredients to make pancakes, biscuits, waffles etc. I also use it in quite a few other recipes too.
The official Bisquick pancake recipe says to mix 2 c. mix, 1 c. milk and 2 eggs and then to pour scant 1/4 cupful onto a hot griddle and fry as you would any other pancake recipe. And here is the official Bisquick biscuit recipe.

Does it have to be refrigerated if you use shortening in place of butter.
Lydia Beiler
No, it should be fine at room temperature since the other ingredients are all not refrigerated items.

Can this be pressure canned to have a longer shelf life?
Lydia Beiler
I don’t think it would work to pressure can as there is not really any liquid. If you are wanting to make a bunch to have indefinitely, I’d recommend making it using vegetable shortening instead of butter. The shelf life will then be the best by date of the shortening or baking powder, whichever is closer dated.
Libby
I bet you could use a jar vacuum with the crisco. I wouldn’t think pressure canning, using heat would be advisable.
Erin
For biscuits ( rolls in New Zealand) use 2 cups biscuit mix to 2/3 cup milk. We love to add a handful of sharp cheddar cheese. Bake at 400 F for 8 minutes. I live at a high altitude so those baking times may need to be adjusted for sea level.

Thank you for this recipe. Will definitely make it.

You are welcome! I hope it works well for you.

Can this be made using solid ghee instead of shortening?
Lydia Beiler
I’m afraid that I have no experience using ghee, so I’m really not sure.
