The thing about convenience foods it that while they are convenient, they are not easy on your budget or your health. The last couple of years it’s kind of become a hobby of mine to come up with substitutions for various convenience food items.
I always feel like I’m scoring a victory when I go to make a recipe that calls for a convenience food item and I can replace it with my homemade version. Yay! Score one for saving money and staying healthy! Weird, I know. But I really do get a kick out of it!
Here are all the substitutions that I’ve come up with so far: Homemade Cream Soup Mix, Homemade “Bisquick” Mix, Homemade Chocolate Syrup, Homemade Real Whipped Cream, and Easy Homemade Pie Crust. They are all simple to make, delicious and so much better for you too!
A couple of years ago I determined to figure out how to make homemade Onion Soup Mix. I had a couple of favorite, easy recipes that used it (like this One Pan Chicken and Rice), but I didn’t feel like relying on the store-bought version.
So, I did a bit of research and came up with this 4-ingredient substitute recipe. It’s so simple, but it totally works!
In about a minute you can throw together this onion soup mix and then use it to replace the popular 14-ingredient store-bought version. Not only will it save you money, but you’ll also be healthier too!

I will be trying this! Years ago I tried another recipe for this and did NOT like it. I’ve been making my own Taco Seasoning and Pancake Mix for years and really want to expand my DIY items. I’ll be checking out the others you posted as well! My goal is to start trying one new DIY – food or product – a week, as possible!
Onion soup mix IS great in burgers, meatballs and meatloaf! I’ve also mixed it with sour cream to make a simple dip – either served with veggies or in the middle of a hollowed out round loaf of bread. I’m on the hunt for a Veg Soup Mix DIY recipe as well. We have a dehydrator – I’ve just never used it 🙁 The shame!!!

I love your goal! Life has been extra busy lately with a baby and trying to prep to move and I miss trying to new DIY things and experimenting with recipes. I’d love to know what you think of this mix if you try it. I’ve never made dip with it yet, but keep wanting too to see how it works. I love your idea of mixing it in burgers. Yum! And I’m jealous of the dehydrator. I think it would be so fun to have one! Although, truth is, I’d probably find it hard to actually get the time to use it right now. Someday though I’d love to have one!

I can’t wait to try this. We use the onion soup for our hamburgers and I haven’t seen the deals on the Lipton that I used to get. Thanks! Your plates are so pretty, too. 🙂

I never thought to add the soup to hamburgers. Yum! The thing I love about this soup mix is that it is so simple and you can either mix it up ahead of time or just quickly do it when you need it for a recipe. I’m kind of partial to the plates too. 🙂 The blue one just makes me happy because I love the color and the small white bowl is from a set that used to be my grandmother’s, so of course it is highly treasured!
